This year, my nephew Jameson and I dove headfirst into beekeeping, and it has been an incredible experience. I never imagined how much I would care for and protect these remarkable creatures.

Pollinators, especially honey bees, are vital to avocado production. Without them, there’s no fruit; with an abundance, yields can increase significantly. Traditionally, we’ve partnered with beekeepers who bring hives after pollinating almond orchards. However, these bees often arrive after our avocado bloom is already underway.

For now, Jameson and I are tending just one hive as we learn the ropes, but the journey has been fascinating. We’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem and the challenges they face.

Below is a photo of Jameson and I inspecting our new hive as our mentor Eddy guides us.
